The Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) is a state-level entrance examination conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA). It is designed for students seeking admission to various undergraduate courses in engineering, pharmacy, agriculture, veterinary sciences, and other professional programs in colleges across Karnataka.

Purpose of KCET:

  • Engineering: Admission to Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programs.
  • Pharmacy: Admission to Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) and Pharma.D programs.
  • Agriculture: Admission to Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) courses in Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Sericulture, etc.
  • Veterinary Sciences: Admission to Bachelor of Veterinary Science (B.V.Sc) & Animal Husbandry.

Exam Structure:

  • Mode: Offline (Pen and paper-based).
  • Subjects:
    • Physics
    • Chemistry
    • Mathematics/Biology (depending on the course applied for) 
  • Question Type: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).
  • Total Marks: 180 marks.
    • Physics: 60 questions.
    • Chemistry: 60 questions.
    • Mathematics/Biology: 60 questions.
  • Marking Scheme:
    • +1 mark for each correct answer.
    • No negative marking.

Syllabus:

  • The syllabus for KCET is based on the first and second-year PUC (Pre-University Course) syllabus prescribed by the Department of Pre-University Education of Karnataka. It includes topics from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Nationality: Indian nationals.
  • Domicile: The candidate must be a resident of Karnataka, and specific reservations are available for rural, Kannada-medium, and other categories.
  • Educational Qualification:
    • For Engineering: Must have passed 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Electronics/Computer Science as optional subjects. The candidate must secure a minimum of 45% aggregate marks (40% for SC/ST/OBC candidates).
    • For Pharmacy: Must have passed 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Mathematics as optional subjects. A minimum of 45% aggregate marks (40% for SC/ST/OBC candidates) is required.
    • For Agriculture/Veterinary Sciences: Must have passed 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

Application Process:

  • Mode: Online registration on the official KCET website.
  • Fee: The application fee varies depending on the category and the number of courses applied for, typically ranging from ₹500 to ₹650 for General and OBC candidates and around ₹250 for SC/ST candidates of Karnataka.

Admission Process:

  • Engineering/Pharmacy/Agriculture/Veterinary: Admission is based on the KCET score, followed by a centralized counseling process. For medical and dental courses, NEET is the mandatory entrance exam.

Important Points:

  • Kannada Language Test: Candidates applying under the "Kannada Medium" quota or those claiming the "Horanadu" or "Gadinadu" Kannadiga status must take a Kannada Language Test.
  • Document Verification: After the KCET results, eligible candidates must participate in a document verification process before attending counseling sessions.

Colleges and Courses:

KCET scores are accepted by a wide range of government, aided, and private engineering, pharmacy, agriculture, and veterinary colleges in Karnataka. Some of the top institutions in the state admit students based on KCET ranks.
